Why "marked woman"?
Here are some examples to understand Deborah Tannen's article(Marked Woman)

Beyonce is also "marked" as a woman. She is marked by her style, clothing and make up. She has long, wavy hair, make up on her face and she has a decolletage. She looks elegant and attractive.

George Clooney is "unmarked" as a man. He is looking handsome, attractive and elegant also. But he is unmarked. Because his hair style, his suit and even his bow tie is "unmarked".
Another examples about being marked or unmarked(SURNAME)
A Love Story:)
Lets create a woman named Sally Brown and a man named Tom Smith:) Miss. Brown(she is marked, we can understand she is a female and also, Miss gives information about her marriage status, she is a single lady) and Mr.Smith(He is unmarked, we can only understand he is a male that's all) fall in love with each other and decide to marry:). But after the marriage Sally will use Sally Smith instead of staying as Sally Brown and also she will be Mrs.Smith and again she will be marked.:( Sally loves Tom so much but she can not accept using Sally Smith she wants to use Sally Brown Smith(2 surnames) But still she can not be unmarked:( this attitude shows us she rebels and she is again marked. At the end of this love story she understands that there was no chance for her. (She was marked, she is marked and she will be marked:()
Biologic approach
XX-> female (pure female) woman is "unmarked"
YY-> nothing (no meaning by only Y)
XY-> male = man is "marked" part of female part of male
Fassold's approach: Biologically it is man who is marked!
