17. "Precious" & "The Bluest Eye"

*Precious dreams about being a movie star.
Pauline wants to look like a movie star.

*When Precious looks at the mirror, she sees herself with a white skin and blond hair. She wants to look like white girls.(search for "ideal beauty")
Pecola wants to have blue eyes.

*Precious' father rapes her.(twice)
Pecola's father rapes her.(twice)

*We can see walls of lovelessness between Precios and her mother.
We can see lack of love between Pecola and Pauline.

*Precious does not know what a family means
Pecola also doesn't know what a family is.

Also I have to mention that, I don't why but I think Precious' story was much more sad:((
Also, if she was not black. She is fat and it may cause a big problem for a teenager. They make fun of her.

  1. Very nice comparisons. :))

I wonder why Precious' story seems sadder. Perhaps because we have the visual support? Or maybe because on top of being black, unattractive, overweight, sexually and physically abused and semi-literate, she also contracted HIV from her rapist father? Her story is really almost unbearable...it's such a shocking film, more like a documentary than a drama - it's telling our society to WAKE UP!
